Kenny Rogers was born on August 21, 1938 in Houston, Texas. His music career started in the 1950s with a rockabilly group called The Scholars. After The Scholars broke up, Rogers bounced around from group to group until eventually landing with The New Christy Minstrels in 1966. Frustrated that The Minstrels weren’t getting the kind of exposure that they wanted, Rogers and members Mike Settle, Terry Williams, and Thelma Camacho left the group in 1967 and formed First Edition, later adding Kin Vassy. The First Edition went on to have a decade of success, recording multiple albums and releasing many singles that had success on the charts. The group disbanded in 1976, and Rogers began his solo career.

Kenny Rogers developed a sound that appealed to both popular and country audiences. His solo career has included multiple albums, and countless singles, with most of them having success on not only the Country Music charts, but also the Billboard Hot 100. At age 61, Kenny set a record when he became the oldest person to have a number one hit on any chart with the 2000 hit Buy Me a Rose, which topped the Country Music chart. His record was short lived, though, when Willie Nelson’s hit Beer for My Horses, recorded with Toby Keith, hit number 1 on that same chart. Kenny Rogers continues to record. In 2006 Rogers released the album Water and Bridges, and 2013 he released You Can’t Make Old Friends.
