Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the defining acts of the 1970s Southern rock scene. Its country-style lyrics set to driving rock and blues rhythms gave its downhome sound an edge that drew in their Dixie-root fans and Northern audiences alike. Formed in 1964 as My Backyard, the band took on the name Lynyrd Skynyrd to mock their high-school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who hated long-haired students. That sense of humor appeared in several of their best-known songs, like Gimme Three Steps and What’s Your Name, but it was songwriter Ronnie Van Zant’s ability to craft powerful rock anthems that made the band a staple of stadium rock.

In 1973, Free Bird, featuring one of the greatest guitar solos in rock history, reached number nineteen on the Billboard charts and became an encore staple in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s live show. A year later, the group that formed in Jacksonville, Florida, followed up with their biggest hit, Sweet Home Alabama. A rebuke of Neil Young’s Southern Man, this unofficial song of the Cotton State peaked at number eight. Unfortunately, in 1977, at the height of their success, three members of the band died in an airplane crash in Mississippi. Unable to go on, Lynyrd Skynyrd broke up. It took ten years, but Lynyrd Skynyrd went back on tour, with Johnny Van Zant taking on his brother’s role as lead singer and the dynamic guitar work of founding member Gary Rossington continuing to delight their fans. More than twenty years later, Lynyrd Skynyrd remains on tour, captivating audiences with their unique blend of Southern country rock. Lynyrd Skynyrd Tour Information

Lynyrd Skynyrd One More for the Fans Tour

Lynyrd Skynyrd has made it clear they don’t need the money; they’re just on tour for the fans. This year’s tour coincides with the release of last November’s epic concert One More for the Fans on DVD and CD, which recalls their classic 1976 concert and album One More for the Road. Their 2015 tour takes them to cities big and small, from New York, Los Angeles, and Houston, to small towns and county fairgrounds where their music is a staple of classic rock radio. Although several dates take place in comfortable theaters and open-air raceways, these good ol’ boys from Jacksonville, Florida, find that after more than forty years on tour, they can still packs stadiums, though fans can expect Lynyrd Skynyrd tickets to be in high demand in some of the smaller Southern and Midwestern venues. After all, the blistering guitar work of Gary Rossington still makes Freebird a concert staple, and Johnny Van Zant sells Sweet Home Alabama as if it were a local anthem no matter where the band plays. Lynyrd Skynyrd definitely has One More for the Fans left in them as this tour shows, but the death of original drummer Bob Burns this year tells fans that they should catch this tremendous live act while they’re still working the road with the vitality of a band half their age.
