Maze, the American soul band from San Francisco, California, was established in the early 70s. Maze is fronted by Frankie Beverly and the band also appears on many bills as Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. Frankie Beverly’s original soul band was called Raw Soul out of Philidelphia in the 1970’s, however, he relocated to San Francisco in 1971, where he met Marvin Gaye. Raw Soul was soon opening shows for Marvin Gaye and eventually changed their name to Maze in 1976 at the suggestion of Marvin Gaye. The band signed to Capital Records soon afterwards and released their debut self-titled album, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly in 1977, which was awarded a gold record and propelled the band into the mainstream.
Maze’s first hit singles from their self-titled were “Happy Feelin’s”, “While I’m Alone”, and “Lady Magic”. Their following albums, Golden Time of Day, released just a year later in 1978, and Joy and Pain, in 1980, were also very successful for Maze and furthered their popularity among fans of their unique, soulful sound. Maze’s fourth album, also released in 1980, was a live recording from their performance at Saenger Theatre in New Orleans, titled Live in New Orleans. Several of their songs from Live in Orleans charted on the U.S. R&B Singles charts, including “Before I Let Go”, “Running Away”, and “We Need Love To Live”. Maze released Can’t Stop the Love in 1985, featuring the hit singles “Back in Stride” and “Too Many Games”.
