For more than 25 years, Megadeth has been a mainstay in the world of thrash metal. Along with iconic bands such as Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer, the group created a new genre of music and despite a number of lineup changes, has managed to be a constant presence in heavy metal circles. The band was formed in 1983 by former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson. The pair have been the only two constant members, and have been joined by a long list of other musicians since the band's founding.
Megadeth’s first album, Killing Is My Business…and Business Is Good, was released in 1985. It offered fans of metal with a new sound that was faster and harder than most music at the time. The record deftly combined elements of thrash and speed metal, and included some of the group's most popular songs including a cover of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" and "Mechanix." Along with being popular among fans, their debut was met with praise from critics as well who noted its raw anger and power. Although their debut was successful, their follow up was even more so. 1986's Peace Sells…but Who's Buying? sold more than 1 million copies in the United States and was considered by some critics to be one of the most influential albums of the decade.
With such success early on, the band was unable to muster the result of their third album So Far So Good…So What!, which earned negative reviews despite being certified platinum. However, the band was still among the most recognizable rock groups of the late 80s, and performed with the likes of Dio, Guns 'n Roses and Iron Maiden. After several years searching for a new sound in the early 90s, the band found it with their fifth album, 1992's Countdown to Extinction. The record is Megadeth's best selling album, with more than 2 million copies sold in the U.S., and earned the group a Grammy nomination. Throughout the rest of the decade, Megadeth tried to recreate the success of Countdown to Extinction with little avail, and even broke up shortly in 2002 after Mustaine sustained a severe arm injury. However, in 2004 the group reformed and started a comeback that would take them through the rest of the 2000s. Megadeth has since been back playing sold out shows alongside other metal legends form the '80s.
