Influenced by David Bowie hits, Suicide's hostile electro punk sound, and pop-friendly masterpieces of the Flaming Lips, MGMT started in 2002, in Brooklyn, New York. The group was created during Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden's freshman year and was first known as the Management. Their first shows consisted mostly of backing tapes, synthesizers, prerecorded vocals and sounds. With time, they transformed into an eclectic, pop group that was creating unique electro music with psychedelic atmosphere.
The band was a great success in 2008 with their breakthrough hit ‘Time To Pretend’ that was literally everywhere and debut LP ‘Oracular Spectacular’ that brought them to the top of many music charts. The guys seemed unstoppable, but then something changed. The more experimental, odd and underrated offerings of 2010’s ‘Congratulations’ and 2013’s self-titled album failed to ignite the same commercial flame and MGMT started to gradually lose their power.
