Due to being the daughter of famous jazz singer and pianist Nat King Cole, it would be easy to dismiss Natalie Cole as an opportunist who made her career off of her father’s name. However, anyone who has ever listened to the music of Natalie Cole would immediately know better. Natalie Cole has produced a steady output since her 1975 debut album, Inseperable, and has changed up her style several times while maintaining generally consistent praise. Any way you look at it, Natalie Cole is a legitimate star.
Natalie Cole was born on February 6, 1950 in Los Angeles, California to Nat King Cole and Maria Hawkins Cole. Natalie always had a passion for music, having been immersed in R&B and jazz music from a young age. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1972 with a degree in child psychology, Natalie began playing in clubs with her band, Black Magic. Before long, Natalie was getting recognized by producers and got signed to Capitol Records, the label that her father had been signed to. Natalie released her debut album, Inseperable, in 1975 and became an immediate success. The song “This Will Be” soared to the top of the charts and earned Natalie Cole a Grammy Award in 1976 for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female. Natalie also won the 1976 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Throughout the rest of the 1970’s Natalie Cole churned out four more albums, each one more popular than the next.
In the early 1980’s drug addiction began to take control of Natalie Cole and her career suffered. After several mediocre releases, Natalie went to rehab to get clean and released her comeback record, Everlasting, in 1987. Everlasting met great commercial and critical acclaim and helped revitalize Natalie’s career. In 1991, Natalie Cole reached the peak of her success with the release of her 12th album, Unforgettable… with Love. Unforgettable… with Love is still Natalie Cole’s top selling album and it won her the 1992 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. 20 years later, Natalie Cole is still going strong, making more jazz and world music in recent years. Natalie Cole 2015 Tour
Throughout her career, Natalie Cole has never toured much, having performed less than 100 concerts since her debut back in 1975. Luckily for Cole’s fans, Natalie will be busy this year with over 10 tour scheduled for 2015! Most of Natalie’s concerts will be on the east coast of the United States this summer, with a date in California as well. In August, will travel to Malaysia and perform two concerts in Kuala Lumpar. This will be Natalie’s first time performing in the country. If her setlist from a concert she performed earlier this year is any indication, Natalie Cole will be treating fans to a diverse array of songs that range from her 1975 debut album, Inseparable, all the way up to her most recent album from 2013, Natalie Cole En Español.
