The 2017 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival runs April 28 to April 30, and from May 4 to May 7. It’s a ten-day festival famous for its diversity and rich history - thousands of musicians, cooks and craftspeople welcome 400,000 visitors each year. The first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April of 1970 became a historical event thanks to the unforgettable performance of Mahalia Jackson, often called the greatest gospel singer. While attending the Louisiana Heritage Fair, she saw Eureka Brass Band leading a crowd through the Festival grounds. When George Wein, the producer of the Festival, gave her a microphone, she started to sing along with the band and joined the parade…that’s how the New Orleans Jazz Fest was born.
This year, the Jazz Fest is going to honor New Orleans’ historical connections with Cuba by creating the largest celebration of Cuban culture in the U.S. since the 1950’s - over 150 Cuban artists are invited and most of them will be in the U.S. for the first time!
