Primus was formed in 1984 by singer Les Claypool on bass and Todd Huth on guitar in El Sobrante, California. The duo initially had problems finding a drummer, so they performed with a LinDrum drum machine until Vince Parker joined them on drums. This began the revolving door on the drum seat. Peter Libby replaced Vince, who then was replaced by Robbie Bean. The band finally settled on Tim Write in 1986, who made it two years before being replaced by Freaky Executives drummer Jay Lane in 1988. Later that year, Lane went back to his old band, and drummer Tim Alexander joined the band. Larry LaLonde had replaced Huth on guitar at this time, and the trio recorded their first live album Suck on This and in 1990 their first studio album Frizzle Fry. Following the release of Frizzle Fry and their rising popularity, Primus was signed by Interscope that same year.
After signing with Interscope, Primus released Seas of Cheese, their major label debut. With the support of Interscope the album was eventually certified Gold. The band toured with many acts, including the band Rush. In 1993 Primus performed at Lollapalooza and in 1994 at Woodstock. In 1995 they released Tales from the Punchbowl which featured their most successful single, Grammy nominated “Wynonas Big Brown Beaver”. Going into the 21st century, Primus went on a three year break from 2000 to 2003 to pursue other interests. Primus got back together in 2003, and primarily focused on touring through 2010. In 2011 they released their first album in over ten years Green Naugahyde and continued touring in support of the album. Primus’s lineup continued to change over the years, with Les Claypool the only constant member. The band continues to record and tour.
