Radiohead formed while band member attended school at the Abingdon School in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The group started out rehearsing every Friday, and thusly acquired the name On a Friday, which was later changed to Radiohead at the request of EMI, the band’s label.Radiohead’s first single, “Creep”, was not well accepted in England, though gained popularity quickly throughout the world when their debut album, Pablo Honey, released. The song was very popular in the United States, making heavy rotation on MTV. With the release of their second album, The Bends, Radiohead saw success and a fan base build in their home country of England.
After "Creep" put them on the map, the band released a series of Gold and Platium certified albums over the next two decades. Starting with OK Computer, the following five albums topped the UK charts and were top 3 in the US, moving millions of records and earning the band a large and devoted fan following.Since their early work, Radiohead has morphed their sound to appeal to their eclectic audience. Synthesizers and samplers accompanied heavy guitars to give Radiohead’s sound an element previously unseen in previous albums.Radiohead is, to some extent, a manifestation of the ideas and musical influence of Thom Yorke, the band’s lead man. Yorke and crew continue to press the envelope for album development and musical styles, and in 2007, the band released the album In Rainbows independently as a digital music download where the user chose the price of the album upon downloading it.This unique sales model didn't hurt In Rainbows on the charts, reaching #1 in both the UK and the US, validating a model that many in the recording indusrty were weary of. Radiohead stuck to the digital distrubtion methods for their followup, The King of Limbs, though they did not continue the same pricing system.
In 2008, Radiohead released their eighth studio album, titled The King of Limbs. Similar to In Rainbows, the album was self-released. The King of Limbs saw Radiohead utilize sampling, to give the band a more spontaneous sound than on their previous few records. The track “Lotus Flower”, garnered worldwide attention after the music video for the song was released online. The album was another massive hit for Radiohead and continued the band’s trend of pushing the limits of socially accepted sounds. Radiohead's most recent album is titled A Moon Shaped Pool and was released in May, 2016.
