Jill Scott is a singer, songwriter, model and actress who began a career in music with her 2000 debut album titled Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, which went certified platinum. Jill Scott followed up her popular debut album with her 2004 released album, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 in 2007, both of which went certified gold. Jill Scott’s 2015 released album, titled Woman, was followed by an extensive tour in support of the album.
Jill Scott first began performing as a spoken word artist at poetry readings and open mics when she was discovered by Questlove from The Roots. Jill Scott started co-writing songs with The Roots and was credited for The Root’s song “You Got Me”. Later in 2000, Jill Scott collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common while touring Canada in a production of the Broadway musical Rent. Following the tour, Jill Scott signed to Steve McKeever’s Hidden Beach Recordings to release her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, which included the Grammy nominated single “A Long Walk”. A live album shortly followed in 2001, titled Experience: Jill Scott 826+ followed by Jill Scott’s second studio album Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 in 2004.
Jill Scott would go on to win the Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance for her song “Cross My Mind” in 2005. Jill Scott came out with a book of poetry in 2005 titled The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours published by St. Martin’s Press. Jill Scott released her third studio album The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol 3. In 2007 with the lead single, “Hate On Me” followed by another live album Live in Paris+ in 2008. Jill Scott toured extensively in the following years, in addition to appearing in several featured films, before releasing her 2015 album Woman.
