Born as Shaffer Chimere Smith in Camden, Arkansas, in 1982, Ne-Yo would work his way up through the record industry to become a renowned singer-songwriter, producer, dancer and actor. Ne-Yo would make his first mark in 2004 as a songwriter when he penned the ultra-successful "Let Me Love You," a hit made popular by the artist Mario, which was played extensively on pop, hip-hop and R&B stations throughout the country. It was around this time that Ne-Yo began recording his own material and in 2006 he released his first studio album, In My Own Words. The album would prove to be a smash hit and would climb to the top of the charts buoyed by the success of the singles, "So Sick" and "Sexy Love." The album would hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 during its first week and would go onto become a multi-platinum selling record.
Hot off the heels of the huge success of his first album, Ne-Yo would avoid the typical sophomore slump that has plagued many musicians by coming back with another hugely successful album, Because of You, in 2007. The album would once again climb to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with the self-titled single "Because of You" peaking at the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.
Not long after the success of his second album, Ne-Yo capitalized on his popularity by releasing Year of the Gentleman, Ne-Yo's attempt to impart a bit of class and sophistication back into the music industry. The record's first two singles, "Closer" and "Miss Independent" would peak at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and would be nominated for a slew of Grammy Awards. In 2010, Ne-Yo would release Libra Scale, which would debut at No. 9 on the album charts. The record featured the singles "Beautiful Monster," "Champagne Life" and "One in a Million," all of which would chart well on hip-hop, R&B and pop rankings.
In 2012, Ne-Yo released R.E.D., an abbreviation for "realizing every dream." The album would hit No. 4 on the Billboard 200 charts and would feature the successful singles, "Lazy Love" and "Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)" featuring Sia. With each successive release, Ne-Yo continues to show his raw musical potential and he looks like he will be a fixture on the hip-hop scene for the foreseeable future.
