Ever since he began performing at talent shows in his native Petersburg, Virginia, Trey Songz (born Tremaine Aldon Neverson) seemed like he was destined for the big stage. With his smooth tenor and hip-hop sensibilities, Trey Songz caught the attention of producer Troy Taylor, who has worked with musicians like Patti LaBelle, SWV and B2K. After receiving his high school diploma, Trey Songz relocated to New Jersey to begin work on his first album and jump start his musical career.
In 2002, the rising star signed a deal with Atlantic Records, began to work on his first album and collaborated with myriad artists to gain further notoriety. After releasing a series of mix tapes and pairing with big names like Lil' Kim, Trina and Snoop Dogg, Trey Songz dropped his first album, I Gotta Make It, in 2005. Upon its release, the album shot to No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and featured the popular singles, "Gotta Go" and "Gotta Make It" featuring Twista. The album proved to be a strong showing from the new artist and helped him break into the hip-hop world.
Songz' second album, Trey Day, proved to be a commercial and critical hit for the artist. The album reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and opened up his musical style to a growing number of fans. While the record's first single, "Wonder Woman," received a warm reception, the album's biggest track was "Can't Help But Wait." The single hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
After the runaway success of his second album, Trey Songz surprised critics with an even stronger showing in 2009. The third album, Ready, reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and yieled the smash hit, "Say Aah" featuring Fabolous. In late 2010, Trey Songz came out with his follow-up album and arguably his best work to-date. Passion, Pain and Pleasure featured the track, "Bottoms Up" featuring Nicki Minaj which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With the singles "Love Faces" and "Can't Be Friends," the maturing musician showed his versatility and willingness to work with a wide range of talented artists.
Trey Songz is one of the most popular acts in R&B today, and it seems like the sky is the limit for the talented vocalist.
