His real name may be Dwayne Michael Carter, but almost everyone else knows him as Lil Wayne. Though he has been in the rap scene since the late '90s, he has only recently come to dominate the genre, appealing to everyone from seasoned rap veterans to newcomers to the music. He has collaborated with everyone from Destiny's Child to Drake to Nicki Minaj, making him a true music mogul.
Lil Wayne got his start at the young age of 15 when he joined up with several other rappers including Juvenile, and was even featured on the hit single "Back That Azz Up," which enjoyed a successful run up the Billboard Hot 100 in 1999. He released his debut album The Block Is Hot later that year, and as far as debuts go it was certainly a hit, peaking at number three on the Billboard charts.
Despite the success of his initial record, it would be several years until Lil Wayne was able to produce an album that was as popular as his debut. However, during that time he was not just siting around. He lent his talents to a number of other artists including on the 2005 Destiny's Child song "Soldier" and his album later that year The Carter II proved to be a moderate success. But, it would still be a few years until he became a household name.
Lil Wayne became a full-fledged star when he released his 2008 album, The Carter III. The record sold more than 1 million copies in its first week and its first single "Lollipop" rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The album also featured another hit single "Got Money," and went on to win a number of Grammy Awards including Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song.
Ever since, Weezy has continued to be a huge presence within the rap world. His mere presence on other artists songs has turned them into hits, including his contributions on "Love in this Club, Part II" by Usher and "Let It Rock" by Kevin Rudolf.
In addition to his collaborations Lil Wayne continued to be a prolific solo artist as well as one of the most dynamic performers around today. With albums like 2010's Rebrith and 2011's Tha Carter IV, there is no slowing down Weezy.
