Love her, hate her, say what you want about her, Britney Spears is one of the influential artists of the last decade. Ever since she burst on the scene as a precocious 17 year old, Spears has continued to roll out hit after hit, and although she's hardly that precocious teen anymore, she is still very much a draw among her throngs of adoring fans.
It did not take long for Spears to become a pop music sensation. Her debut album, ...Baby One More Time, hit record stores in 1999 and was an immediate hit. Propelled by its popular title track, the album debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts and eventually sold more than 8 million copies by the end of the year. It featured a number of hit songs including "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and "Sometimes," both of which set Spears up for a successful decade.
Her sophomore album, 2000's Oops!...I Did It Again, was also a smash hit. In addition to its title track, the songs "Stronger, "Lucky" and "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know," helped the record reach number one and launched Spears on a worldwide tour.
Over the coming months, Spears' appeal only continued to grow and perhaps peaked with the 2001 album Britney. The record signaled a drastic change in her look and sounds, highlighted by the sultry song "I'm a Slave 4 U" and the not-so-subtle "Not a Girl Not Yet a Woman." Over the next several years, Spears parlayed her popularity into film and eventually collaborated with her idol Madonna on the hit single "Me Against the Music."
By the middle of the decade, Spears had hit a rough patch, and after some much publicized personal struggles, it appeared as though she would never be able to reach the level of success she once enjoyed.
However, such was not the case, and in 2008 she returned with the hit album Circus, a refreshing return to form for Britney. The record included some well-received hits including "Womanizer" and "If You Seek Amy."
Thanks to her resurgence, Britney remains a force within the music world. Her 2011 album Femme Fatale enjoyed a similar reception as its predecessor, and it appears as though Ms. Spears is here to stay.
