Throughout the late '90s there were plenty of flash-in-the-pan pop stars who had little in the way of vocal talent, but Christina Aguilera broke the mold. The blonde bombshell burst onto the scene after beginning her career alongside a slew of future stars on The Mickey Mouse Club, and has remained one of the strongest voices in the music world ever since.
While her first significant exposure occurred as a result of recording a song for the 1996 animated movie Mulan, it was not until 1999 that she emerged as a force to be reckoned with the pop world. Her self-titled debut album hit stores in August of that year and was an immediate hit. The first single "Genie In a Bottle," reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts and signaled her arrival. The record also spawned a number of other popular singles including "What a Girl Wants" and "Come On Over Baby (All I Want is You)," both of which became number one hits.
Despite the immense popularity of her debut, it would be three years before Aguilera re-emerged with a new edgy look and the similarly provocative 2002 album "Stripped." The record is most remembered for the lead single "Dirrty" in which the former Mouseketeer attempted to shed her previously squeaky-clean image. However, the album also included the pensive "Beautiful" which earned her a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Much like the gap between her first two records, fans would have to wait another four years before Aguilera released a new album. However, it was worth the wait as she gave the music world 2006's Back to Basics, which employed a more old school sound that hearkened back to the '40s and '50s.
Back to Basics was an immediate success and gave Aguilera ample chance to showcase her impressive vocal abilities on songs like "Hurt" and "Candyman." Above all, however, it was her performance on the swing-inspired tune "Ain't No Other Man" that earned her the most praise as well as a Grammy.
Although she may now be known as one of the judges on the popular singing competition The Voice, Christina continues to record to music and has collaborated with a number of famous artists, most recently Maroon 5. With a voice like hers, it's hard to imagine her shrinking from the public eye.
