Ever since they made waves with their debut album more than 10 years ago, Coldplay has firmly cemented itself as one of the premier bands in the world. Thanks in large part to a sound that is both radio friendly and musically complex, Coldplay has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The popular British band got its start in 1996, but it would not be until 2000 that they would get their big break. That year, Coldplay released Parachutes, its first full-length album, and it was an immediate hit. Paced by lead singer Chris Martin's vocals "Yellow," the record went on to go seven times platinum in the United Kingdom and double platinum in the United States. It also included a number of popular tracks including "Trouble" and "Don't Panic."
While many bands fall victim to the so-called sophomore slump with their second album, such was not the case for Coldplay. The band released A Rush of Blood to the Head in 2002, and it was a popular as its predecessor. The record cracked the top five on the Billboard 200, and spawned a number of popular songs including "Clocks," "The Scientist" and "In My Place," all of which were hits among a wide swath of music listeners.
Coldplay was able to keep the string of hits going in 2005 when they released X&Y. Much like Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head, the album featured a slew of hits including the contemplative "Fix You" and "Speed of Sound," both of which earned considerable airplay soon in the UK and the U.S.
Though Coldplay's first three albums were undeniably popular, 2008's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends proved to push them over the edge. Thanks to the tunes "Viva la Vida," "Violet Hill" and "Lovers in Japan," the album was considered one of the best of the year and won the Grammy for Best Rock Album.
Few bands have had such an impressive run to begin their career, and Coldplay appears to only be getting better. With a loyal following of fans seemingly all over the world, there's no reason to believe why Coldplay won't be a major force in music for years to come.
