During the early '90s in the height of the alternative and grunge boom in rock music, the Counting Crows took the world by storm with their debut album, August and Everything After, and quickly became rock royalty in a genre that was going through a bit of an identity crisis. The band, featuring lead singer Adam Duritz, guitarist David Bryson, bassist Mike Malley and drummer Steve Bowman combined many elements of traditional rock with the soulful melodies of Duritz's that helped the Counting Crows attract listeners from classic and contemporary rock alike.

The Counting Crows' first album was a smashing success, which featured a number of major hits, including "Mr. Jones" and "Round Here," both of which would break into the top 10 of the modern rock charts. The record would go onto sell seven million copies and would open up a world of opportunities for the band. The group was asked to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Van Morrison in 1993, and earned the coveted opener spot for the Rolling Stones tour in 1994.

At the end of 1995, the Counting Crows went back into the studio to record their second album, Recovering the Satellites, which would hit No. 1 during its first week of release. The record boasted a series of hit singles, including "A Long December," "Angels of the Silences," "Daylight Fading" and "Have You Seen Me Lately." After an extensive tour to promote the album, the group released its first live album in 1998, Across a Wire: Live in New York. The record featured two notable performances for the band - a stripped-down acoustic set for VH1's Storytellers and a full band ensemble for MTV's Live From the 10 Spot.

The Counting Crows scored their highest-charting hit in 2000 with "Hanginaround," which was included on the band's third studio album, This Desert Life. The band would take a series of brief hiatuses from recording and touring, releasing Hard Candy in 2002 and Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings in 2008. However, it was the Counting Crows' early successes that have earned them legions of adoring fans, and their concerts are still a major draw year after year. In 2012, the band released Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation), a critically-acclaimed work that showed the band still has the ability to surprise after all these years.
