John Mellencamp, born October 7, 1951 in Seymour Indiana, formed his first band at the early age of 14. He released his first album, Chestnut Street Incident, in 1976, under the name Johnny Cougar. This was because his manager at the time thought that nobody would buy an album by anybody with the name "Mellencamp." Six years and multiple albums later, Mellencamp finally hit it big with the album American Fool. American Fool featured the hits "Hurts So Good" (four weeks at No.2, sixteen weeks in the top 10) and "Jack & Diane," (Four weeks at No.1). "Hurts So Good" went on to win a Grammy at the 25th Grammys. Mellencamp has been releasing hit albums and singles over the last 40 years. In the 1990s John had enough clout to have "Cougar" removed from his name, and has been touring and recording as John Mellencamp ever since.
John Mellencamp's career has spanned over 40 years. He is still releasing albums and touring nationally, including an 80 city national tour that wrapped up on August 4, 2015. In 1985 he helped organize Farm Aid, and on September 19, 2015 he performed with a great lineup of artists for the 30th anniversary of the festival.
