With an instantly recognizable voice that straddles the line between tenor and baritone, Josh Groban has emerged as one of the most popular singers of the last decade. With a legion of adoring fans, his soothing vocals and engaging persona have made him a favorite among large swaths of music lovers the world over.
Despite his impressive chops, Groban originally intended to be an actor, but after some friends discovered his penchant for singing it was only a matter of time before he made it big. His foray into music began at a very young age, and by 2000 he had enjoyed appearances on numerous television programs including The Rosie O'Donnell show and Ally McBeal, all of which led to his self-titled debut album which hit stores in 2001.
Although his debut was a popular record, eventually becoming certified double platinum, Groban's success rested largely in the adult contemporary realm. His popularity among the certain demographic thanks in large part to his covers of easy listening tunes such as Don McClean's "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" and the Celine Dion single "The Prayer."
While most artists suffer from a sophomore slump, the opposite was true for Groban. His second album, Closer, pushed him from easy-listening favorite to bona-fide star. The 2004 record reached the top spot on the Billboard 200 and eventually became certified quadruple platinum. The album's immense popularity was due primarily to what has become his signature song, "You Raise Me Up." Though a classic tune that has been recorded by numerous other artists, Groban made it his own and it certainly identified with him more than any other singer.
Since then, Groban has become a standard on talk shows, awards shows and other events throughout the year. He's been a staple on the Oprah Winfrey Show, on which he's appeared six times, and he's also been a performer at some of the most-watched television events of the year including the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Super Bowl XXXVIII. Additionally, he has made several appearances as himself on the hit FOX show Glee, further cementing his star status.
His most recent contribution, 2010's Illuminations, was once again well-received by critics who applauded Groban's songwriting acumen on tracks such as "Hidden Away" and "Higher Window."
