She may have her roots in gospel music, but Katy Perry has certainly come a long way since singing at her parents' church as a child. With a long list of catchy pop tunes and a unique stage presence, Perry has become one of the most popular singers of the last several years and has already left an indelible mark on the world of pop music.
Born Kathryn Hudson, Perry took her mother's maiden name soon after she began her recording career, but it was not easy going at first. Perry struggled to gain traction early on in her career, and it was not until her official mainstream debut, 2008's One of the Boys, when her career began to take off.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the album was a huge success among fans. Thanks to a slue of popular hits, including "I Kissed a Girl," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and "Hot n' Cold," which reached number three, the album sold more than 5.2 million records and was considered one of the most popular of the year and earned Perry several Grammy nominations.
In the months that followed her debut, Perry became a mainstay on television and radio as her engaging personality and popular live shows made her a household name. Perry earned a spot on MTV Unplugged in 2009, which gave her an opportunity to showcase her considerable vocal talent as well as her guitar-playing ability.
Encouraged by the popularity of her debut, Perry began work on her follow-up album, Teenage Dream, which was released in August of 2010. The record far surpassed its predecessor, and features three number one singles, the Snoop Dogg-infused "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream" and "Firework." The success of the album has further cemented Perry's status as one of the preeminent pop stars of the day, and her place as an up-and-coming pop culture icon.
With a flair for controversy and a fashion sense rivaled only by Lady Gaga, it's no surprise that Katy Perry has managed to become a hit so quickly. With a popular sound and a legion of faithful fans, it's safe to assume that Perry's rise through the music world has only just begun.
