One might not think that rock music infused with classical influences could be a popular genre, but they need look no further than The Moody Blues to change their mind. With more than 70 million records sold over its storied career, the band remains one of the most unique groups to enter mainstream music in recent memory.

Formed by bassist and lead singer John Lodge in the early 1960s, The Moody Blues rose to prominence in 1964 thanks in large part to the song "Go Now." The track, a cover of an older Bessie Banks song, flew up the charts in the United Kingdom, eventually landing in the number one spot. It was also a significant hit in the United States, where it managed to crack the top 10. While it put their name on the map, it wouldn't be until several years later when The Moody Blues' career really took off.

By 1967, the band had welcomed the addition of the creative force that is Justin Hayward. A talented composer, guitarist and singer, his presence was prominently felt in their concept album Days of Future Passed, which remains one of their most iconic records. As one of the forbearers of progressive rock, the album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and the tune "Nights in White Satin" earned them considerable mainstream success, eventually reaching number two in the United States.

Though Days of Future Passed enjoyed immense success, it was almost 20 years before The Moody Blues were able to enjoy the same level of popularity again. But they found it in 1986 with the release of The Other Side of Life, which renewed their place among on the pop charts. The single "Your Wildest Dreams" was a top-10 smash and propelled the album to respectable position on the Billboard 200. Perhaps most noticeable in this album, their 11th studio release, was the influence that the synth-pop trend of the '80s had. While the classical music-infused sound was still there, the contemporary flare provided a unique twist on their characteristic sound.

While they have been together for more than 40 years, The Moody Blues show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Despite relentless touring throughout the '90s, the quartet continues regularly perform and remain a favorite among a wide swath of fans.
