Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are a legendary rock band from Gainesville, Florida, founded in 1976 and consisting of Tom Petty and the original line-up of vocalist and guitarist Mike Campbell, bassist Ron Blair, drummer Stan Lynch, and keyboardist Benmont Tench. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ line-up has undergone a very few changes over their musical career. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers helped to pioneer the heartland rock movement in the 70s and 80s. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are perhaps best known for their hit songs, “American Girl”, “Breakdown”, “The Waiting”, “Learning to Fly”, “Refugee” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has sold over 80 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time. Early in his music career, Tom Petty performed in bands such as The Sundowners, The Epics, and Muscrutch, which also consisted on members from The Heartbreakers. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ first album was self-titled and include their hit songs, “American Girl” and “Breakdown”. In 1978, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released You’re Gonna Get It!, the band’s first gold record which featured singles such as “I Need to Know” and “Listen to Her Heart”. The band’s third album, titled Damn the Torpedoes, was released in 1979. This album featured some of their most popular songs, like “Don’t Do Me Like That” and “Refugee”. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their album Hard Promises in 1981, featuring many more hit singles. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ fifth studio album, titled Long After Dark, was released in 1982 and included the songs “You Got Lucky” and “Change of Heart”. On the band’s next album, Southen Accents, released in 1985, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their hit single, “Don’t Come Around Here No More”. The band’s 1987 album, Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough), included the song “Jammin’ Me”, which placed at the 18th position on the single charts. In 1991, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released the album Into the Great Wide Open, one of their most popular yet, featuring the single “Learning to Fly”. The band has since released many greatest hits and compilation albums. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live performances are characteristic of their heartland rock songs, which often feature blue collar themes in the lyrics.
