Roderick David Rod Stewart, popularly known by his stage name, Rod Stewart, is a British rock singer and songwriter. He was born on January 10, 1945 in London, England, known for his raspy singing voice. Belonging to the working class, he held a number of odd jobs, working as a silk screen painter, a newspaper delivery boy for his family shop, a grave digger, fence erector and sign writer. His ambition was to become a professional footballer and he gave a trial at a football club, but they never called him back. Rod’s singing career rose to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s while he was part of a band, ‘The Jeff Beck Group’. Rod Stewart went on to join a group ‘Faces’ but decided to pursue a solo career alongside.
He released his first solo album ‘An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down’ in 1969, but his big break as a solo artist came with the release of his album, ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’ in 1971, which made him a house hold name. In 1975, Rod Stewart moved to the United States and the next year reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 with his song ‘Tonight’s the Night’. The album ‘Foot Loose and Fancy Feet’, in 1977 featured his own band, Rod Stewart Group. , which gave hit singles like ‘You’re in my Heart’, ‘Hot Legs’ and ‘I was only joking’. His next hit single was ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy’ in 1978 from his album ‘Blondes Have More Fun…or do they?’ which sold over 4 million copies. Many of his albums, after 1980, did not fare well, and so he decided to try his luck with the classics. He recorded The Great American Songbook series and won his first Grammy Award for volume III, Stardust in 2004.
In 2006, Rod Stewart was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. According to the 2012 year sales data, he was the tenth best selling artist in Canada.
