Scorpions is a German rock band which was formed in Hannover in 1965 and is one of the most famous and longest existing rock bands in the world. They have sold over 22 million records, making them one of the most successful bands of Continental Europe. The band initially consisted of five members, Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitarist), Klause Meine (vocals), Mathias Jabs (Lead guitarist), Herman Rarebell (drums) and Francis Buchholz (bass). This lineup started in 1978 and continued till 1992 and was the most successful period for the band. They are known for their 1980s rock anthem ‘Rock You like a Hurricane’, which is ranked at #18 on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs, and singles like Wind of Change, Still Loving You, Send Me an Angel and No One Like You.
The band was ranked at #46 on Vh1’s Greatest Artist of Hard Rock program. They recorded their debut album, Lonesome Crow in 1972. There were some changes in the line-up when one of their guitarists left the band. The band released their next album Fly to the Rainbow, with a new line-up. Followed by In Trance (1975), Virgin Killer (1976) and Taken by Force (1977). Their next album ‘Lovedrive’ is considered the pinnacle of the band’s career. It reached #55 on the US Charts and marked the first commercial success for the band. Animal Magnetism (1980), Blackout (1982), Love at First Sting (1984), World Wide Live (1985) and Savage Amusement (1988) received positive reviews and commercial success.
In 2004, Scorpions released their album ‘Unbreakable’, followed by the concept album Humanity: Hour 1 in 2007. In 2010, the announced their retirement after a farewell tour, along with the release of their album ‘Sting in the Tail’. On 6th April, the same year, they were enshrined in Hollywood’s ‘Rock Walk’ in a handprint ceremony. In 2014, band member Klaus Meine announced their next album Return to Forever, which was released on 20th February 2015, coinciding with the band’s 50th Anniversary.
