The Smashing Pumpkins is an alternative rock band that formed in Chicago, in 1988. Since then though, there have been several changes in the band's lineup. Their songs have a sense of different genres in guitar heavy sounds. Such as dream pop, gothic rock, heavy metal, electronica, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and shoe-gazing. Billy Corgan has been the main influencer of the band. He is the group's primary songwriter. His songs and albums have been described as, anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan's nightmare-land. Many of the lyrics which Corgan has written for the Pumpkins have been based on emotions. The lyrics have a personal muse and very strong indictments for those close to him, and the band. Many musicians such as Gerad Way and Nelly Furtado have been and still are influenced by The Smashing Pumpkins.
