The band Styx was formed in Chicago in 1970. Styx is perhaps best known for their 1980s albums which include pop rock style with hard rock guitar, strong ballad singing and theatrical instrumentals. The band is well known for their hit song, “Lady” released in 1973, “Come Sail Away” in 1977, “Babe” in 1979, “The Best of Times” in 1981, as well as many more hit singles. Styx has had 5 multi-platinum albums and 16 Top 40 singles. The original name of the band was The Tradewinds, which included brothers Chuck Panozzo, John Panozzo, and their neighbor, Dennis DeYoung. John Curulewski and Jame Young were later added to the line-up in 1972 when the band signed to Wooden Nickel Records and the band changed their name to Styx shortly thereafter. At Wooden Nickel, the band produced their 1972 self-titled album Styx, as well as Styx II in 1973, The Serpent is Rising in 1973, and Man of Miracles in 1974 in their own signature style of progressive rock mixed with alternative rock. Styx was performing frequently at local clubs and colleges at this point in their career with a strong Chicago fan base backing them. Their first breakout hit was “Best Thing” from their debut self-titled album, which peaked at the number 6 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100, followed by “Lady” from Styx II, which also reached the number 6 spot and saw plenty of radio play from 1974 to 1975. Styx later signed to A&M Records in 1975 and soon released Equinox that same year, which included one of their hit songs, “Suite Madame Blue”, a track which saw a lot of radio air play that year.

Styx released Crystal Ball in 1976, which featured the hit song, “Mademoiselle”, reaching the 36 position on Billboard’s Hot 100. Styx seventh album, The Gran Illusion, was one of their most popular, released on 7/7/77, reaching triple platinum certification and featured their classic hits such as “Come Sail Away” and “Fooling Yourself”, both of which received significant airplay. In 1978, Styx released Pieces of Eight, their eighth studio album, which included tracks such as “Renegade” and “Blue Collar Man”. In 1979, the band’s album Cornerstone saw their first number one hit single, “Babe”, which was their first international number one hit and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance in 1980. 2015 saw the return of Styx as they began playing reunion tours in stadiums all over the world.
