The Decemberists are an eclectic American folk band out of Portland, Oregon. Formed in 2000, they are known for lyrics focusing on historical incidents and folklore. Their live shows often include audience participation, and they reenact sea battles and other historical events on stage. The band released their fifth studio album January 20, 2015 What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, after a brief hiatus. Following the release of the album, they spent the rest of 2015 on tour across the United States. The Decemberists tickets are available for upcoming shows.
In 2000 Colin Meloy moved to Portland, Oregon and met Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, and Chris Funk on separate occasions. After going through a few drummers, the band eventually settled on John Moen. The name refers to the 1985 Decemberist revolt in Imperial Russia and is meant to invoke feelings of the month of December. The band released its first EP, 5 Songs, in 2001, which was used as the band’s demo tape.
Following the release of the album Castaways and Cutouts the Decemberists worked with the Kill Rock Stars recording label from 2003 to 2005. Under the new label they rereleased Castaways and Cutouts, as well as two other albums, Her Majesty the Decemberists and Picaresque. In 2005, The Decemberists signed with Capital Records and released the album The Crane Wife on October 3, 2006. The band appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and the Colbert Report in support of the album.
