Descendents are an American punk band from California, who have been writing and playing as a group since the 1970s. They have gone through lineup changes, breakups and reformations, and careers in biochemistry, but still enjoy playing live. This year, Descendents are on a world tour, visiting North America and Europe.
The band started with friends playing guitars and having fun together before it became a serious venture. Descendents’ first recording was as a trio, with vocals being split between members. The band recorded and released the double A-side “Ride the Wild/It’s a Hectic World” off their own steam and through their own record company. This resulted in a pure and raw sound - a producer’s nightmare - where the guitar was turned up way too loud. However, this began a career of nomadic and relaxed eras of Descendents, to go along with their California surf-punk style, which was always tongue-in-cheek, but more laid back than they ended up becoming as the years went on. Milo Aukerman joined the band in the very early 80s, and kickstarted this new sound. Energy, fun and the continued use of adult language and themes helped birth the distinctive California punk genre that was so huge in the 80s and 90s. Descendents; first studio album release was called “Milo Goes to College” in direct reference to the fact that lead singer Milo Aukerman left the band to study biology. This led to the band’s first hiatus. The Descendents’ drummer Bill Stevenson toured with fellow punk pioneers Black Flag, and their guitarist Frank Navetta burned all of his equipment. It would be another 10 years before he rejoined his bandmates, though he had never fallen out with them.In 1995, Aukerman’s itch to write and perform music became so much that the musicians in All also reformed Descendents. There were essentially two bands of the same lineup, with only the vocalists being different. An album was recorded called “Everything Sucks”, and it also saw the return of Frank Navetta and Tony Lombardo. Since then, Descendents have released two more albums, and have played shows to dedicated fans all over the world. Aukerman has since left his biochemistry career in favor of music, and this year, the band will be playing shows all over North America.
