The Head and the Heart are an indie folk band from Seattle, Washington that came together in 2009. The Head and the Heart is made up of Josiah Johnson (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Jonathan Russell on vox, guitar, and percussions, Charity Rose Thielen on violin, banjo, and vox, Chris Zasche on bass, Kenny Hensley on piano, and Tyler Williams on drums. The Head and the Heart came together after playing a series of open mic nights at Seattle's Conor Byrne pub in Ballard. The Head and the Heart released their debut self-titled album after burning their own CDs and making handmade denim album covers for each record. After selling their albums at shows and at local record stores such as Easy Street and Sonic Boom in Seattle, The Head and the Heart quickly sold out of records. The band signed to Sub Pop Records in 2010 and rereleased a new version of The Head and the Heart that was mixed and remastered, expanding it with a studio version of their closer track “Rivers and Roads” and a re-recording of their song “Sounds Like Hallelujah”. Sub Pop distributed the record nationwide, including a vinyl LP that was released on Record Store Day 2011. After their record re-release, the band toured around the United States and Europe opening for Vampire Weekend, The Walkmen, Dr. Dog,Dave Matthews, The Low Anthem, The Decemberists, Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, and Death Cab For Cutie, as well as headlining their own shows.
The Head and the Heart released their second album Be Still in 2013. The album peaked at the number ten position on Billboards Top 200 Albums chart. The album included The Head and the Heart’s hit songs, “Shake”, “Homecoming Heroes”, and “Another Story”. Many of the band’s songs were also licensed by television shows and films. In 2016, The Head and the Heart released their third studio album, Signs of Light, including their song “All I Ever Knew” which peaked at the number one position on Billboard’s Thot 100 Singles chart, and began touring extensively in support of the album.
