The Killers, the indie rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, was formed in 2001 by lead vocalist and guitarist Brandon Flowers, backing vocalist and guitarist Dave Keuning, bassist and backing vocalist Mark Stoermer, and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. When Brandon Flowers left the Las Vegas synthpop band, Blush Response, Flowers began searching for other members to start his own rock band. The Killers were soon formed and created their first demo in 2001 and were performing live shows by 2002. The Killers signed with the British independent label, Lizard King Records, in 2003 and released their debut studio album Hot Fuss shortly after. Hot Fuss received several Grammy Award nominations for their hit tracks “Somebody Told Me” and “Mr. Brightside”. Seven months after the release of their debut album, Hot Fuss went certified 7x platinum in the UK and Ireland. Following the album’s release, The Killers went on tour with British Sea Power to open for them on their UK tour.
The Killers’ first headlining tour was not until 2004, where they performed in both Europe and America. The Killers were named The World’s Best Selling New Group by the end of 2005 at the World Music Awards. They also won the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards for Best New Artist and were nominated for three Grammy Awards that same year. In the UK, where The Killers have a large fan base, they won the NME Award for Best International Band while Brandon Flowers was named the Sexiest and Best Dressed Man at the NME Awards. The Killers second album was Sam’s Town, released in 2006 and named after a small casino in Las Vegas. Sam’s Town sold over 706,000 copies around the world within its first week of release and went 5x certified platinum in the UK.
The Killers’ third album, Day & Age, was released in 2008 and reach the number six position on the Billboard Top 200 albums charts, although it hit the number one spot in both the UK and Ireland. The Killers’ follow this up with their album, Battle Born, released in 2012 and was their fourth consecutive album to reach the number one position on the UK album charts. A greatest hits album of The Killers’ most popular songs came out in 2013, titled Direct Hits. In 2016, The Killers released their fifth studio album, which included their lead single “Look Alive”.
