The Monkees are an American rock band formed in 1965 by Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider as part of a television show with the same name. although the premise for the TV show The Monkees was about a fictitious band struggling to succeed in the music industry, The Monkees became a real band well after the series ended. The initial songs that the band recorded were used for the TV show, but The Monkees were able to obtain the right to use them for their musical career after the television show ended in 1968.
The Monkees debut self-titled album was created for their TV series in 1966 and debuted at the number one position on the album charts. In 1967, they released More of the Monkees, which debuted at the top of the album charts. Later that year The Monkees released Headquarters and had their third consecutive album reach the number one position on the album charts. A third album was released in 1967, titled Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. In 1968, The Monkees released The Birds, The Beeds & The Monkees, which debuted at the number 3 position. Later that year, they came out with and album titled Head, which peaked at the number 45 position. In 1969, The Monkees released Instant Replay and The Monkees Present. Their 1970 album, Changes, only reached the 152 position on the album charts. The Monkees eventually disbanded in 1971, only to reunite in 1986.
In 1987, The Monkees released their first album after reuniting, titled Pool It!, which peaked at 77 on the album charts. It wasn’t until 1996 that they would release another album, titled Justus. Although the popularity of The Monkees declined in later years, they continue to have a strong and dedicated fan base. The Monkees have sold more than 75 million records worldwide and are perhaps most famous for their hit songs, “Last Train to Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Daydream Believer" and "I'm A Believer".
