In 2010, a YouTuber known only as The Weeknd uploaded a few alternative R&B-infused rap songs that quickly went viral and landed him in the middle of the mainstream music world. Within a year, The Weeknd, a Canadian singer born Abel Tesfaye, quickly released twenty-seven self-produced songs to critical acclaim and fan approval. It wasn’t long before record companies came calling and placed the productive and inventive hipster from Ontario into a fully stocked studio. When his first album of mostly remastered songs cracked the top ten in the United States and the United Kingdom, the publicity machine geared up for his release of brand new material. The Weeknd’s 2013 release, Kiss Land, produced several singles, but it was the Drake-supported track Live For that allowed him to climb the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and get plenty of play on urban radio. Of course, the music world hadn’t seen anything yet. The smooth singer with sometimes explicit lyrics was about to dominate the R&B charts in a way no one ever had. His 2015 album, Beauty Behind the Madness, landed the top three spots on the charts simultaneously – the number one hit Can’t Feel My Face, followed by The Hills and Earned It. To say that The Weeknd is a tour de force in the R&B world is an understatement. He has mainstreamed his once underground, alternative form of rhythm and blues and made The Weeknd into a seven-days-a-week necessity for his growing legion of diehard fans.
