Tori Amos story goes from being kicked out of the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music to selling over 12 million albums. Skilled in the piano at a young age, she earned a full scholarship to the music school, but her dislike of reading sheet music and penchant for more popular faire lead to her dismissal. Arguably Tori landed on her feet and made the most of her natural talent.
A first attempt at making it in popular music was a failure. She formed the band "Y Kant Tori Read" in 1986, the name a reference to her adversarial relationship with sheet music at the Peabody Conservatory. The band self-titled debut was not successful commercially and they subsequently broke up. Tori, under a six record contract, embarked her soon-to-be successful solo career.
Her first solo album, Little Earthquakes, was very personal, and a much bigger success, introducing the world to one of a new crop of female singer-songwriters that would help define music in the early 1990s. Little Earthquakes only reached #54 on the US charts when released, but would eventually be certified double Platinum.
What followed was a string of successful albums to round out the 90s, Under the Pink, Boys for Pele (her most successful), From the Choirgirl Hotel, and To Venus and Back. Each would reach Platinum or double Platinum, and chart in the top 12 in the United States.
Amos moved to a new label in 2002, releasing the concept album Scarlet's Walk. The album would reach gold and spawn one of her most successful singles, "A Sorta Fairytale," which reached #1 on the US Album Alternative charts. Her time with Epic was rocky, and she eventually departed, moving to Universal and releasing two more albums Abnormally Attracted to Sin and Midwinter Graces.
Amos continues to write, record, and release new music, while still touring and providing fans around the world with the opportunity to see her play live. Check out her uniquely personal shows today.
