Founded in 2009 at a Columbus, Ohio College, Twenty One Pilots is a band that proves that determination and perseverance really does pay off. The three founding band members and friends included a trio of performers: Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih, with only Joseph remaining. Being the resourceful students they were, Twenty One Pilots’s first self-published self-named album was released in late December 2009. A few of their tracks were previously published as a demo reel, which was often given out to audiences as they were leaving their shows. In 2010, the band released a pair of singles that were free to download on their Soundcloud account and enjoy; however, even though these tracks are still available, they are now have a small fee. 2011 was a whirlwind year for Twenty One Pilots to say the least. Due to scheduling conflicts, both Thomas and Salih left Twenty One Pilot to pursue other interests. Josh Dunn joined shortly after, creating the current lineup. Later in the year the first album that incorporated the new lineup was released, Regional at Best. Similar to previous shows, a free copy of the album was dispensed to the audience. In November, Twenty One Pilots performed a sold-out show at the Columbus Newport Music Hall, where a dozen music labels started to fight over who was going to represent them. After some deliberation, it was decided in April 2012 that Twenty One Pilots would sign with Fueled by Ramen, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records.
Twenty One Pilots started uploading videos to their YouTube channel, which included future hits “Holding on to You”, “Car Radio”, and “Guns for Hands.” In 2013, Vessel, Twenty One Pilots’s first full length album produced by Fueled by Ramen, was released. This album had one domestic hit “Holding onto You”, which placed on the Billboard Alternative Charts at number 11. 2013 also marked when the band started to hit the mainstream audiences. Their first performance was on Conan, where they performed “House of Gold”, which was later uploaded to their channel. The news didn’t stop there. In May, alternative rockers Fall Out Boy announced that Twenty One Pilots would be opening for them on their Save Rock & Roll tour, which gave the band even more opportunities to reach the public. By 2014, Twenty One Pilots had broken through to mainstream audiences. Music events and festivals started to request performances. The band instead of committing to one tour, took some of these events and blended them into their Quiet is Violent World Tour. They continued to rock the television air waves with performances in two different platforms: MTV’s Movie Awards and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
