UB40 are an English pop reggae band, and have been making music for almost forty years. Over that time they have released over 50 singles and 18 albums, and have maintained a huge fanbase. The band are named after the shortened term used for the Unemployment Benefit, Form 40, which was important to UK residents in the band’s home city of Birmingham at the time, as unemployment and poverty were a huge problem for the working class. The band were also all unemployed after school and into the beginnings of UB40 as a band. The name fit, and so it stuck.

The band began by playing popular reggae chart hits, as well as some of their own compositions, and they would play bars and clubs around the city. Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders saw one of their gigs, and offered UB40 a support slot. This led to the release of their first single, “King/Food For Thought”, which reached no. 4 in the UK chart, even though it was released on a small, independent label.

The band released their debut album, “Signing Off”, as a nod to the fact they were no longer unemployed, and it has been certified Platinum. As they played bigger and bigger shows, they brought unknown bands from Birmingham to support, showing that they never strayed far from home. “Labour of Love” was released in 1983, and established UB40 in the US, as well as over the world. The album was a collection of cover songs, which had been interpreted into their own reggae style. One of the songs on the album was “Red Red Wine”, and the song still remains one of their best known. Over the years, the band has released more material, played some of the biggest concerts, and collaborated with a host of popular musicians from pop, rock, reggae and country music. Although the band went through lineup changes, they still deliver an amazing show, and bridge gaps between genres that hasn’t been done in quite the same way before or since.
