Umphrey’s McGee is an American progressive rock band originating from South Bend, Indiana. The signature Umphrey’s McGee style of rock is referred to progressive improvisation, or improg, a reference to their live performances, much of which is improvised. Despite Umphrey’s McGee being part jam band, their live sets often have much more organization to them then bands such as Phish or Grateful Dead. Still, Umphrey’s McGee has an ever-changing set list during their live performances, making each and every live performance unique. Their style of performance has been likened to that of King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, and Genesis, however, it also includes a heavy metal feel to their songs, similar to bands such as Iron Maiden and Guns N Roses. Umphrey’s McGee formed in 1997 by guitarist and vocalist Brendan Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik, keyboardist Joel Summins, and drummer Mike Mirro. Early Umphrey’s McGee conert included their original songs as well as covers such as Guns N Roses “Patience” and Vince Guardli’s theme from the children’s cartoon, “Peanuts”. The band also played songs from Phish and The Grateful Dead during their early live sets.
In 1998, Umphrey’s McGee released their first live album, Songs for Older Women, while adding percussionist Andy Farag and guitarist Jake Cinninger to their line-up. Over the years, several members of Umphrey’s McGee, including Jake Cinniger and Joel Cummins have released solo albums, which had songs that appeared in Umphrey’s live set repertoire. Umphrey’s McGee went on to play at huge festivals, such as Bonnaroo Music Festival, as well as tour around the world. Their live sets are well known for their high energy and improvised set lists.
