For over 20 years, Wilco has established itself in the alternative (and subgenre alternative country) and indie music scene. Based in Chicago, the only founding members that remain in the group are Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt: however the remaining members (Patrick Sansone, Mikael Jorgensen, Nels Cline, and Glenn Kotche) have been part of the band’s lineup since 2004. After being offered a label from Reprise Records, Wilco became a favorite band amongst critics. Their first album A.M., placed in 27th slot of the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and earned its 34th place slot on the Village Voice's 1995 Pazz & Jop Critics Poll. Wilco’s second album, Being there, although unintentional, improved their standings with the critics as well as growing their new audience. Not only did it reach the 73rd slot on the Billboard charts, but it placed 14th on the 1996 Pazz & Jop Critics Poll and it received attention from Rolling Stone. As Wilco’s popularity began to grow, the band got newer opportunities, including recording a collaborative album with British artist Billy Bragg titled Mermaid Avenue, which won Wilco their first Grammy nomination.
Wilco released their fifth album in 2004, A Ghost is Born, which was their first top ten album in the U.S. and received two Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Recording Package in 2005. Their sixth album Sky Blue Sky, had mixed reviews, something that the band had never experienced before, however, it became a number one selling album in many countries and had some of its singles used for a Volkswagen campaign. Wilco, the band’s seventh album, released in June 2009, reached the number 4 slot on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and number 2 on the Billboard's Top Rock Albums Chart.
Wilco Star Wars Tour
Wilco’s ninth album Star Wars was a free download for digital streamers released on July 16, 2015 and is currently on the charts, taking the 8th slot on Billboard’s US Independent Albums Chart, as well as placing in the top twenty on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums and Billboard’s Top Alternative Album Charts. The CD was released in August 2015 and the vinyl edition of Star Wars will be available during the holiday season. Shortly after the digital release of Star Wars, Wilco announced the Star Wars Tour, a domestic tour that featured opening acts Speedy Ortiz and Jenny Lewis during the opening and middle of the tour. The remaining dates, all with American solo guitarist William Tyler, are scattered throughout the Midwest, South, and North, each stop offering a treat to fans. Tyler, who is an upcoming talent, is known to be a powerhouse in his own right, so when you mix Wilco’s cerebral music to Tyler’s energy, this tour is one you won’t want to miss.
