Yellowcard, who are known for their songs “Ocean Avenue”, “Only One”, and “Lights and Sounds” formed in Jacksonville, FL in 1999 after meeting at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. Yellowcard got their name from a phrase the members used whenever someone committed a party foul, such as spilling beer on the carpet.
Yellowcard signed to Capitol Records and began recording their major-label debut, Ocean Avenue, in February 2003. The first single off of Ocean Avenue, “Way Away” peaked at 25 on the modern-rock charts and put the band in the mainstream of music. It wasn’t until late 2003 that the band released the hit single, “Ocean Avenue”, which would make it to 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. Yellowcard toured heavily in support of their album Ocean Avenue and headlined the 2004 Warped Tour. Between the success of “Ocean Avenue” and their song “Empty Apartment” featured on an episode of One Tree Hill, Yellowcard officially had achieved mainstream success and their album Ocean Avenue sold over one million copies in the United States alone.
Yellowcard’s second album, Lights and Sounds was released in 2006. The title track, “Lights and Sounds” was the first single and peaked at No. 4 on the billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks. Lights and Sounds sold over 90,000 copies in its first week of release and would go on to receive gold status. Yellowcard would then release their album Paper Walls in 2007.
In 2008 Yellowcard announced that they would be taking an indefinite hiatus. The band would reunited in 2010 and would put out three more albums, When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes, Southern Air, and Lift a Sail before announcing they would be breaking up for good after releasing their final self-titled album in 2016.
