Originally known as the Jakes, Young the Giant began in Irvine, California, and gained a following for their unique blend of indie and alternative rock. After forming in 2004, the band went through a series of lineup changes and today's group features Sameer Gadhia on vocals, Jacob Tilley and Eric Cannata on guitar, Payam Doostzadeh on bass and Francois Comtois manning the drums. After paying their dues playing at clubs and dive bars, the band won an online contest in 2009 to open up for the Kings of Leon at the House of Blues in Chicago. After receiving critical acclaim for their appearance, Young the Giant played the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, where they caught the attention of record producers and were soon on their way to rock stardom.
In 2009, the group was signed by Roadrunner Records, changed their name, settled on a final lineup and went into the studio to work on their debut album. Young the Giant spent much of 2010 touring with Minus the Bear and Steel Train and tried out much of their material on new audiences. The self-titled album was released in January 2010 and featured collaborations with My Morning Jacket's Bo Koster and Roger Manning from the band, Jellyfish.
The band's first single, "My Body," was well-received on the Billboard rock and alternative charts and steadily gained popularity after a series of well-publicized performances. Young the Giant scored a huge gig in late 2010 when they were asked to perform at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. With this additional exposure, "My Body" reached No. 24 on the iTunes singles chart and helped pave the way for the band's second single, "Cough Syrup." Additionally, the band taped an MTV: Unplugged special in 2010 that further expanded their popularity and opened them up to more viewers. This stripped-down performance allowed fans to see a different side of the band and showed their growth as musicians. With a slew of headlining appearances and an ever-growing group of supporters, Young the Giant is one of the freshest faces in modern rock and tickets are in high demand.
