Corpus Christi lies on the coastal region of south Texas directly east of the Texas barrier islands. Also known as the “Sparkling City by the Sea”, Corpus Christi’s Location is what gives the city such a great appeal. Founded in 1839 as Kinney’s Trading Post, the city did not receive its name until September 9, 1852. Before becoming the 5th largest port in the Nation and still under the identity of Kinney’s Trading Post, the city was used to sell supplies to a Mexican revolutionary army. The roots and culture of Corpus Christi not only shine through the city’s history but are forever embedded into the Latin and Spanish influenced name. Corpus Christi literally means “Body of Christ” and was given to the settlement by the Spanish.
Being a coastal city, fishing has always been a huge attraction and provided a great means for the city. As Corpus Christi has grown to the eighth largest city in the state, it has also seen a growth in tourism. From the Botanical Gardens and Nature Center to the Texas State Aquarium and across The Harbor Bridge, Corpus Christi is full of popular attractions to enjoy. Sports have also settled into the cities repertoire, as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and a handful of other club sport teams call the city home. Among the more popular array of sports, Corpus Christi is home to the Hooks Baseball of the Texas League, Ice Rays of the North American Hockey League and the Hammerheads of the Intense Football League. Due to the cities endless supply of wind gusts sailing, kite boarding, wind surfing, and surfing are extremely popular recreations.
