This rivalry has always been intense, but reached its highest point when the Broncos defeated the Raiders for the AFC Championship game in 1977. Adding fuel to the rivalry was the Broncos hiring Mike Shanahan as their head coach after he had spent time as the Raiders head coach.
A rivalry that dates back to the 1960s, these two teams battle it out two times a year and often times for a chance to be division champion. With over 100 matchups and one playoff game, there are no secrets between the teams. The intensity level always seems to be at its highest when these two teams meet and has even carried over to the head coaches during their postgame handshake. 2015 Denver Broncos Season Preview
It is hard to say that a team that finished with 12 wins and a division title had a disappointing season, but to many Denver Broncos fans, 2014 fell short of expectations. After a disappointing defeat in Super Bowl XXXXVIII, the Broncos were eager to prove that they could bring a title home in 2014. Peyton Manning once again delivered a fantastic season, but a first round defeat to the Indianapolis Colts left a sour taste on the season. Enter 2015 and the Denver Broncos are once again a threat to reach the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning returns in what might be his last season, and his favorite targets Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders return. Denver filled a number of needs in the 2015 NFL draft, including bringing in offensive line talent in Ty Sambrailo and Max Garcia. Whenever Peyton Manning is behind center, the Broncos will be a threat to score tons of points, and with the offensive cast around him, there will be little doubt that the Broncos will be in the race for the Super Bowl once again in 2015.
2014 Denver Broncos Season Preview
While the Super Bowl was a Sunday to forget for all Broncos fans, the season leading up to it was one of the most memorable. The Broncos went 13-3 behind Peyton Manning and the best offense in the NFL and made a great run through the AFC playoffs. The Broncos are one of the favorites in the conference once again in 2014, even with the losses of Eric Decker and Knowshon Moreno. It hasn’t been all losses though, as the Broncos have added WR Emmanuel Sanders, DE Demarcus Ware and CB Aqib Talib. Denver was also able to add on help in the secondary and at wide receiver in the first few rounds of the draft. The Broncos will open the season by welcoming in Manning’s old team, the Colts, in Week 1. The Chiefs will take the trip to Mile High in Week two, before the Broncos head to Seattle for a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. Big games against the 49ers and Patriots await in midseason, and Denver will close it out at home against the Raiders in Week 17.
2011 Denver Broncos Season Preview
It’s been a long and winding road over the past few years for the Denver Broncos franchise. However, after firing head coach Josh McDaniels and replacing him with the experienced John Fox as head coach, seeing the Broncos return to prominence is not out of the question. The Broncos will have a relatively reliable quarterback under center in Kyle Orton when they kick off the season. While Orton will be solid, the productivity of the talent surrounding him may be in question. Running backs Knowshon Moreno and Willis McGahee will shoulder much of the carries. The wide receiving corps is led primarily by big play threats Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal. The defense is most certainly the strength of this year's Broncos team. Specifically, they have one of the best linemen in the league with Elvis Dumervil, who emerged as a premier pass rusher last season. Additionally, the Broncos are lucky to have Champ Bailey, who not only adds veteran leadership but also an excellent cover corner. Rounding out the squad is safety Brian Dawkins, who will be entering his third season with the team.
2010 Denver Broncos Season Preview
Josh McDaniel's first year as coach of the Denver Broncos got off to an auspicious start, but after they stumbled down the stretch, the Broncos finished 8-8 and missed out on the playoffs for the second straight year. There were a few additions and departures in Denver this offseason that may make it difficult for them to surpass the San Diego Chargers as champions of the AFC West. Quarterback Kyle Orton lead the offense in 2009, but his position as starter is in question heading into the regular season. Orton will be challenged by Brady Quinn and Denver's first round pick Tim Tebow. Whoever wins the starting job will be without one of the best receivers in the NFL, as Brandon Marshall signed with the Miami Dolphins in the spring. Although they lost Marshall, the Broncos still have a solid pair of running backs in Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno. The Denver defense took a big hit recently when linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who had 17 sacks last season, suffered a torn pectoral muscle that could sideline him for the of the year. With Dumervil's absence, much of the leadership onus will fall on veteran conrerback Champ Bailey. Although the AFC West is typically one of the easiest divisions, the Broncos will have a tough time competing with so many unknowns.
2009 Denver Broncos Season Preview
The Denver Broncos had a tumultuous offseason that started with the firing of longtime Coach Mike Shanahan. Mile High fans probably thought things were back to business as usual once they hired new Coach Josh McDaniels away from the Patriots. But then word surfaced that the Broncos had shopped their up-and-coming quarterback Jay Cutler in a three-team deal that would have brought QB Matt Cassell from New England. Whoa, that's quite an offseason. The question now is how do the Broncos respond on the field in 2009? If Denver doesn't implode, then expect them to be a major player in the AFC title picture. They've got questions to answer at running back and wide receiver, but there is just too much talent on their roster not to do well in '09. If the defense gives them anything, they could win the AFC West.
