The Northlands Coliseum has been the site of some of the most memorable moments in NHL history dating back to the mid-'80s when the Edmonton Oilers were on top of the professional hockey world. Built in 1979 and boasting a capacity of 17,100, the Northlands Coliseum is a bit more intimate compared to other modern-day arenas, and the Oilers truly have a home ice advantage when the stands are packed. The venue is located three miles outside of downtown Edmonton in an area called Northlands Park that includes a racetrack, a casino and other large exhibition buildings. There's no shortage of lodging or entertainment in the area, and concert goers and sports fans alike will love the arena's ease of access and the cozy nature of the storied building.

The Edmonton Oilers began play at the Northlands Coliseum in 1974 and after a few middling seasons, they were poised to change the landscape of the NHL forever in the 1980s. This decade saw the arrival of all-time greats Wayne Gretsky and Mark Messier, as well as a slew of potent scorers and defenseman like Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson. The Oilers would make the playoffs every year during the 1980s and lay the groundwork for one of the biggest dynasties in professional hockey history.

The Oilers cruised to their first Stanley Cup title in 1983 over the New York Islanders in a series sweep. But that wouldn't be the end of the Oilers' winning ways - the team would go on to win the cup in 1984, 1987, 1988 and 1990. The team would even rekindle its old glory in 2006 when it surged to the Stanley Cup finals, but after an inspired performance, they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games.

The Northlands Coliseum is also a fabulous venue to catch a concert or live performance, as it is easily accessible from downtown Edmonton. The arena has hosted such high-grossing tours as Keith Urban's Escape Together World tour, Muse's Resistance North American Arena tour, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' Mojo Tour 2010 and The Black Eyed Peas The E.N.D. tour.

The Northlands Coliseum is an arena steeped in NHL history, and every hockey fan should take a pilgrimage to this renowned building to get a taste of Canadian professional hockey at its finest.
