Few music festivals anywhere rival the history and success of the Newport Folk Festival. Co-founded by legendary folk singer and environmental activist Pete Seeger in 1959, this event introduced the world to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Kris Kristofferson, and saw many superstars and soon-to-be superstars cross its four stages, from Johnny Cash to Arlo Guthrie, Muddy Waters, and the Black Crowes. Although the Newport Folk Festival began as a celebration of Appalachian folk tunes, Southern bluegrass, and Delta blues, the 2017 event, from July 28-30, reflects both traditional and contemporary folk styles, including popular sub-genres like folk rock and alternative country, as well as more obscure niches like folk punk. Befitting its stature as the granddaddy of the modern, multi-day music festival, the Newport Folk Festival takes place at the beautiful Fort Adams State Park, along the shimmering waters of Brenton Cove. Not surprisingly, concert organizers make a concerted effort to be eco-friendly, with extensive recycling and composting activities, plus the 2-Mile Challenge that encourages concertgoers to bike to the festival. In the spirit of its founder, who wrote the civil rights anthem We Shall Overcome, the Newport Folk Festival works hard to bring people of all stripes and backgrounds together, from seemingly disparate musical styles to audience members from around the world. This festival, now celebrating its 55th non-consecutive year, has turned itself into the place for die-hard folk fans to find new talent and old friends. 2018 Newport Folk Festival at Fort Adams State Park Address: 84 Fort Adams Dr, Newport, RI 02840
Fort Adams State Park caps the southwest corner of Aquidneck Island, jutting out into Newport Harbor in a truly peaceful and idyllic setting. Boats float by as performers play on one of the park’s four stages, or concertgoers head to food, craft, and vendor tables. The Late July Family Tent is a great place to grab a quick bite, relax in the salt-air breeze, and catch surprise performances from unannounced guests. Although getting to the event may require some patience as you join thousands of fellow attendees and immense tourist traffic heading to the beaches, Fort Adams State Park does a good job of isolating you from the world and making folk music its one and only focus.
