Summerfest is the self-described “largest music festival in the world”, though this claim has been backed up by the Guinness World Record board for almost 20 years, and by its amazing statistics. The festival has been running since 1968, and attracts between 800,000-900,000 people each year, over 11 days in June-July. There are 11 stages, and over 1000 performances are due to be held. Summerfest 2017 is set to run from June 28-July 2 and July 4-9.
The stages are spaced out over one area of the city of Milwaukee, though that area is huge. Each area is now a permanent part of the city, and is used all year round. These stages showcase artists both local and worldwide, and the festival has a strong Milwaukee influence in its history, artwork and food. Summerfest also holds the Emerging Artists Series, in which musical artists of any and all genres can play to massive crowds. Past years have had some recognizable names, so be sure to check some of these potential stars out. Past headline acts have included; Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, The Beach Boys, Santana, Paul Simon, Sting, Cher, Whitney Houston, Metallica, Janet Jackson, Pearl Jam, Britney Spears, Nine Inch Nails, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Tim McGraw, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, and some notable comedians who have performed include; Bob Hope, George Carlin, Jay Leno and Jon Stewart. There really is something for everyone all over the festival. Whilst this year’s lineup hasn’t been announced, and it would make for a hard read, the headliners for this year are; the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink, Luke Bryan, Zac Brown Band and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers with Chris Stapleton.
