World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has been one of the most popular spectator sports in the United States for half a century. Founded by Vince McMahon and Toots Mondt, this federation became popular early on by staging regular events at Madison Square Garden. After being renamed the WWF in 1976, the company was sold to Vince McMahon's son in 1983, which began the golden age of professional wrestling. The 1980s were a time of massive growth and publicity for the WWF, as Vince McMahon Jr. realized that wrestling would have to break out of regional matchups and truly reach a national scale. McMahon Jr. went on a massive recruiting mission, signing such wrestlers as Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and many other future legends.
In the late '80s and early '90s, the WWF began its Monday night television war with World Championship Wrestling (WCW). The WWF's Monday Night RAW and WCW's Monday Night Nitro were the two biggest weekly events in wrestling and became a bitter rivalry after a few former WWF stars defected to the new league. However, WWF would come out on top of the ratings war and would purchase the WCW in 2001. Today, the WWE continues to rank among the most popular live events with hugely popular shows like Live, Raw, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, WrestleMania, Hell in a Cell and many other themed events. WWE still has competition both from AEW wrestling and UFC, but WWE demand continues to outpace both as millions of fans attend their live events every year. If you love wrestling, then get out to see a WWE event in 2024 when the play near you.
