Hazeltine National Golf Club

Chaska, Minnesota is where you will find the Hazeltine National Golf Club. The former president of the United States Golf association Totton P. Heffelfinter, made the decision to create a golf course capable of hosting major events and hired Robert Trent Jones to design it.

Before anything took place, many financial difficulties ensued, along with other problems. At one point, it looked as if the course would never open. However, the problems were eventually overcome, and Hazeltine opened, named after the nearly Lake Hazeltine.

Jones originally had the design set for a length of 7,410 yards. The goal of the design was something demanding that would act as a test to each of the players on the course. The course finally opened in 1962 and had its first golf championship in 1966, the Women's US Open. The (men's) US Open played in 1970 caused many complaints among players, due to the difficulties with the course and windy conditions. This spured many of the changes with the course. It would take 7 years for a major tournament to return, when in 1977, Hazeltine hosted the women's U.S. Open once more.

It was not until the 1980 PGA Grand Slam of Golf that large alterations to the course started. There was a committee put together on the revision of the course. The "upgraded" Hazeltine made a debut in 1983 for the U.S. Senior Open. The Championship turned out a success and increased prestige of the course on theinternational golf scene.

Robert Trent Jones son, Rees, took over course design in '86 when it was awarded the 1991 U.S. Open. The course underwent extensive changes in preperation for the prestigious championship. Some changes included additional tees, repositioned bunkers, and adjusted fairways, resulting in more rave reviews. In 1994, the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship was held at Hazeltine, followed by the 1999 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.

Presently, Hazeltine has firmly established itself as one of the esteemed major championship venues. In 2001, the U.S. Men's State Team Championship was held, followed by the 2002 PGA Championship. The U.S. Amateur Championship was held at Hazeltine in 2006. Now the PGA Championship returns for August 10-16, 2009. Make sure to grab a program on your way in.
