Whistling Straits Country Club

The PGA Championship is one of the most prestigious tournaments a professional golfer can hope to win. As the final of the sport's four major championships, it is among the oldest tournaments in the United States. This year, the event comes to Whistling Straits in beautiful Mosel, Wisconsin. This links-style course is nestled along the gorgeous banks of Lake Michigan and provides both golfers and spectators alike with a treat as it offers fantastic views of the lake and the greens.

The last time the PGA Championship made its way to Whistling Straits was in 2004 and it resulted in one of the most memorable major championships of the last 10 years. The title eventually went to Fiji's Vijay Singh, but not before a three-way playoff with Chris DiMarco and Justin Leonard provided some intense drama. Singh bested DiMarco and Leonard on a three-hole playoff after he birdied the first.

The Course
Nearly every spot on the course offers fans views of the drama like what unfolded in 2004, but thanks to some new additions the views have gotten better. The new Straits Skyboxes that are placed along the 16th, 17th and 18th holes will bring fans closer to the action than ever before and there are few places better to be than the closing three holes on Sunday.

For those who wish to wander the course, there are several holes where stopping to watch play is a must. One of the most iconic holes at Whistling Straits is the par-3 17th. This 223-yard test of skill is sure to yield some interesting results as it is bordered by a precarious 20-foot drop on the left side. Taking a walk down the par-4 9th hole is a treat too. This downhill hole is hard to beat when it comes to the beautiful scenery.

Playing at Whistling Straits
Golf lovers who wish to play around at Whistling Straits have two options at their disposal. There is the Straits Course, which is where the PGA Championship will be played, or the Irish Course. Both are open to the public, if tee times are made far enough in advance and the Irish Course ranked 30th in Golf Digest's 2009 top 100 best courses.

Aside from a terrific golf course, Whistling Straits has an exquisite restaurants for guests to dine in after watching or playing a round of their own. The Whistling Straits Restaurant provides patrons with a diverse menu that features British isles fare to go with the European style of play of the course itself. A less sophisticated choice for dining is the Take 5 Cafe, which has everything from smoothies to panini.

Travel & Lodging
Whistling Straits is located 15 minutes from the town of Kohler - which is located south of Green Bay but north of Milwaukee along the coast of Lake Michigan. For those who are coming from out-of-state and flying, landing at General Mitchell International Airport is a good idea. The airport is the largest in Wisconsin and Whistling Straits is just over an hour drive.

There are plenty of places for visitors to spend the night around the area as well. The Inn at Woodlake is not a far drive from the golf course and offers 121 picturesque rooms. Perhaps most alluring of the this lodging option is that it is located adjacent to the Shops at Woodlake, which is home to some of the best shopping in the area and is open seven days a week.

Local Attractions
With such proximity to one of the Great Lakes, any visitor would be remiss if they did not stop and enjoy an American landmark. Take a trip to the Kohler-Andrae State Park to be treated to the an up close experience with Lake Michigan. The park is home to picturesque dunes, beaches and crystal clear water.

Anybody looking for a break from golf can certainly find it as well. One of the best options is to go to the Kohler Design Center. This open-to-the-public showcase features innovative design and technology. It is home to products from the Kohler design company, which is widely known for its plumbing, furniture and cabinetry products. For those looking for a less manufacturing-based way to spend the day, there is the beautiful Gardens of Kohler. This lush botanic garden boasts over 1000 acres of pristine scenery.

After a long day on the golf course, there a few things better than kicking back at a local bar for a few drinks. Luckily, the area around Whistling Straits is not lacking in that area. Since the course is modeled after English links courses, it would be fitting to add an English-styled night cap and making a trip to The Duke of Devon is the perfect way to do it. This riverfront pub, which is in the nearby town of Sheboygan is a great place to get a pint and enjoy a welcoming atmosphere.
