Dell Match Play

The final DELL Match Play was played in March 2023. It was played at the scenic Austin Country Club located on Lake Austin in the foothills of West Lake. The 2023 tournament was the 7th Dell Match Play at ACC, and fans who attended say it was an amazing event with the top golfers in the PGA.

Austin was a special event for these top golf pros who used it as a chance to get their game in shape for the The Masters which teed off just a couple of weeks after Dell. Over the years, the field for the WGC tournament included the top golfers in the World: Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, and Tommy Fleetwood.

WGC Dell Match Play

The WGC Dell Match Play features the 64 of the top ranked golfers in the world competing in match play tournament at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas. The ACC course is situated right on the water of Lake Austin and sets up as a perfect golf course for match play golf with its abundance of risk/reward golf holes. The Dell Match Play has quickly become one of the most popular golf tournaments, both with the players and the thousands of fans who attend each day.

The WGC Dell Match Play Championship is one of the four tournaments that make up the World Golf Championship series. The WGC Dell Match Play Championship is the 2nd event of the World Golf Championship series, played annually after the WGC-HSBC Championship and before the WGC-Workday Championship and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Founded in 1999 as the WGC Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship, the WGC Dell Match Play Championship has also been known as the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship, and the WGC Cadillac Match Play Championship.

Match Play Format

The Match Play begins with 16 groups of 4 players playing a round robin set of matches on Wednesday through Friday. The top player in the standings for each group, then advances to the Round of 16 on Saturday. The matches on Saturday morning, then produce the final eight golfers who compete on Saturday afternoon. The winners of the Saturday afternoon matches then play in the Semifinals on Sunday morning. The championship match of the Dell Match play is on Sunday afternoon and puts the final two players against each other in a 36 hole match play. Past champions of the DELL Match Play tournament at ACC include: Scottie Scheffler, Billy Horschel, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Kevin Kisner.

Dell Match Play at Austin Country Club

Austin Country Club ranks in the top 10 courses in Texas and has been the home for this amazing tournament the entire time its been played in the Lone Star State. The WGC Dell Match Play is played each Spring at ACC, which is located just minutes from downtown Austin in the beautiful Texas hill country. The course is widely regarded as ideal for Match Play because of the combination of risk-reward holes on the course that force golf's best players to make tough decisions. The PGA Tour has chosen to "flip the nines" for the tournament so the pros play the normal club back 9 first, but play that as holes 1-9. That allows the pros to then play the club's normal front nine as holes 10-18. The reason for this change is to capture the beauty of the ACC course better, as it is situated right next to the Colorado River.

Fans attending the tournament will want to spend time on both nines, but should definitely spend time on the holes down near the water where the scenery is breathtaking. The most popular hole is #12, which is a long Par 5 with a green protected by water on one side. The iconic Pennybacker Bridge is the backdrop for this hole, which makes it the most popular spot to get a selfie. The biggest crowds for the tournament come out Thursday and Friday, so the weekend is an ideal time to go walk the course to see its beauty while watching some amazing golf.
