It’s hard to believe that Green Bay, Wisconsin, has been at the center of the football universe for more 60 years. A small city nestled beside the Great Lakes, the humble area is nothing like the metropolises of New York, Dallas and Chicago that boast most of the football history, yet Green Bay stands among them, a city replete with history, culture and passion that every avid sports fan must visit at some point in their life.
Of course, you can’t think about Green Bay without first thinking about the Packers. One of the iconic franchises in all of sports, the Packers have been in the NFL since 1921, and have had some of the most famous players put on the green and gold. Bart Starr, Brett Favre, Reggie White and now Aaron Rodgers have all thrived in Green Bay.
Although the teams themselves are legendary, the stadium where the Packers play is almost as much a part of the city as they are. Lambeau Field has been the Packers’ home since 1951, and remains one of the most difficult places for opposing teams to play. Sometimes called the Frozen Tundra in the latter half of the season, the 73,000-seat stadium is among the most historic sports venues in the United States, and seeing a game there alongside all the screaming Cheeseheads and getting to witness a Packers player to the traditional Lambeau Leap into the crowd is certainly and experience all its own.
Though Green Bay is most definitely a football town, there are still plenty of other things to do and see in this warm and inviting city. The Bay Beach Amusement Park is one of the oldest theme parks in the country, and has been fun for the entire family since 1892. Additionally, visitors looking to find something to do other than football may want to check out some of the sights including the Green Bay Botanical Garden and the National Railroad Museum.
You don’t have to be a Packers fan to appreciate what the team has done for the sport of football. Green Bay hasn’t earned the name Title Town USA for nothing, and with the Packers owning four Super Bowl titles (including one in 2011), it’s fair to assume that football will always be in the blood of this Midwestern city.
