The Houston Texans are an NFL football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans are the second franchise to have emerged from Houston - the Texans formed in 2002 after the Houston Oilers moved to Nashville, Tennessee (they are now the Tennessee Titans).

On October 6, 1999, the NFL's expansion committee informed Bob McNair and other Houston officials that they awarded the 32nd NFL franchise and the 2004 Super Bowl to Houston. Soon after that, in September 2000, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Bob McNair unveiled the new logo and team name for the 32nd NFL franchise - the Houston Texans.

The Houston Texans began play on September 8, 2002 against the Dallas Cowboys. They stunned the Cowboys 19-10, and became only the second NFL expansion in history to win their first game. The team would go on to lose their next five games, but would rout the Jacksonville Jaguars - a team they would prove successful against in the future. The Texans would finish their inaugural season with a record of 4-12. Despite their losing record, the Texans would send two players to the Pro Bowl, the most ever by an expansion team.

In 2004, the Texans would finish better, going 7-8 on the season. In 2005, however, the Texans faltered, and ended the season in regression at 2-14 - the worst in the league. 2006-2008 saw the Texans' offense improve under head coach Gary Kubiak, but the Texans could still not pull off a winning record.
